Follow the white rabbit

A view of Freenet secure P2P software installation.

Freenet

Is a secure peer-to-peer solution :

Freenet is free software designed to ensure true freedom of communication over the Internet. It allows anybody to publish and read information with complete anonymity. Nobody controls Freenet, not even its creators, meaning that the system is not vulnerable to manipulation or shutdown. Freenet is also very efficient in how it deals with information, adaptively replicating content in response to demand.

Is a rpm to install freenet ?

No, Mandriva policy don' t permit rpm creation for peer2peer software : long time policy. (just bittorrent is permit to download ISO files from peer clubers and servers)

But freenetproject have a solution to easy install it on our computer. Now we will view this good way on our Mandriva boxes :

Create a new user

Create a new user on Mandriva is very easy with drakxtools. Create a special user for this special program could be a very interesting thing for several reasons. Like have an easy access and easy way to control all files in this new /home. Like have a separated /home from current user on box to have sure we only share what we want and no more ...

Installation

First step of Installation

just open a term and su to new user (here : freeneteur). Now we can launch the download of first package, trought the java control center, simply copy this command line : javaws http://downloads.freenetproject.org/alpha/installer/freenet.jnlp

What we see :

First launch of Freenetproject on our boxes :

Control the installation

we can view in /home the new directory for freenet and navigate in to control all files.

How can i connect to other peer ?

In addition to introduction, we know now freenetproject is secure p2p, so we need to obtain an invitation on this network to have access to another peer. For that, simply connect to irc.freenode channel #freenet and just ask what you want. If all from you are ok, certainly you connect now on #freenet-refs.
